The world uses two major measurement systems. The metric system, developed during the French Revolution and now used by nearly every country, is built on powers of ten with a single base unit per quantity. The imperial system, used primarily in the United States alongside a few others, evolved organically from medieval English units and includes measures like the foot (originally based on a human foot) and the gallon (originally eight pounds of wheat). The UK sits in between, having adopted metric for most purposes but retaining miles for distance and pints for beer.
Temperature is the one quantity that does not use a simple multiplication factor, because the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales have different zero points. Converting between them requires both a multiplier and an offset, which is why the formula includes the '+ 32' or '- 32' term. Kelvin, used in science, shares the same interval as Celsius but starts at absolute zero.
