US Honours
The Grade Point Average originated in the United States in the late 19th century, as universities sought a standardised way to compare students across different courses and institutions. The 4.0 scale became the de facto standard, though the precise mapping of percentages to grade points varies between schools. The UK system is structurally different: UK universities classify entire degrees rather than averaging individual courses, with classifications (First, 2:1, 2:2, Third) based on the overall distribution of marks.
The credit-weighting system matters because not all courses carry equal weight. A 6-credit course contributes twice as much to your GPA as a 3-credit course with the same grade. This is why you cannot simply average your letter grades - you must weight each grade by its credit value first. The cumulative mode also accounts for credits already earned, which is why a strong semester raises your overall GPA less in your final year than in your first.
