Tipping is a financial transaction wrapped in social expectation. The percentage you choose and whether you tip at all depend on a mix of local custom, the type of service, and personal judgement. This calculator handles the arithmetic - the bill multiplied by your chosen percentage, divided among the group - so you can focus on the social decision rather than the maths.

The practice has a contested history. Most scholars trace its modern form to Tudor England, where wealthy households gave coins to visiting servants. The word itself is likely unrelated to the popular acronym story ("To Insure Promptitude") - linguists consider that a folk invention. What began as an aristocratic gesture became, in some countries, a structural part of how service workers are paid. In the United States, the tipped minimum wage has been $2.13 per hour since 1991, which is why tipping there is effectively mandatory rather than a bonus for exceptional service.

How to Use

A Note on Tipping Norms

Tipping expectations vary more than most people realise. In the US, 18 to 20% is standard for table service and staff rely on it for their income. In Japan, tipping can cause genuine confusion - good service is considered part of the price. In much of Europe, a service charge is already included in the bill, and leaving small change or rounding up is appreciated but not expected. The percentages below are starting points, not rules.
